Abstract
Background: Recent studies have suggested that both sleep duration and serum uric acid levels may be important risk factors for many chronic diseases. However, there have been only a few studies relating sleep duration with serum uric acid levels, and the results are inconsistent. Thus, this study aimed to examine the association between sleep duration and serum uric acid levels in Korean adults.

Methods: Data from 16,712 adults (¡Ã19 years old) who participated in the 2016?2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were included in this study. We defined 6?8 hours of sleep duration as adequate sleep. Hyperuricemia was defined as a serum uric acid level ¡Ã7 mg/dL in male and ¡Ã6 mg/dL in female. The odds ratio of hyperuricemia associated with sleep duration was calculated based on sex and obesity status using multivariable logistic regression analysis.

Results: Female who slept for <6 hours and >8 hours were associated with a significantly higher odds ratio of hyperuricemia than female who slept for 6?8 hours (odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 1.55 [1.22?1.98], 1.27 [1.01?1.58], respectively). However, after adjusting for confounding variables, the sleep duration was not significantly associated with hyperuricemia in both males and females. In addition, the sleep duration was not significantly associated with serum uric acid levels in obese and non-obese participants.

Conclusion: Inadequate sleep duration was not significantly associated with the risk of hyperuricemia in Korean adults.
